Connect Toast to Pickup Signal

Do this once, on a computer. After that, orders rung up on Toast appear on your pickup board by themselves. If someone else manages your Toast account, send them this page.

Before you start

In Toast Web: make API credentials

  1. Sign in to Toast Web.
  2. Go to Integrations → Toast API access → Manage credentials.
  3. Click the arrow beside Create new credentials, then choose Standard API.
  4. Name them Pickup Signal.
  5. Tick these scopes:
    • orders:read (required)
    • guest.pi:read (puts names on tickets)
    • restaurants:read (your shop's name)
  6. Pick your location, then click Confirm.
  7. Copy the Client ID, Client secret and API access URL. Toast shows the client secret only once, so keep this tab open until you've pasted it.
  8. Open the email Toast sends about the new credentials. It has your restaurant GUID. Copy that line.

In Pickup Signal: paste the credentials

  1. On your Pickup Signal dashboard, click Order sources on your shop. You can also click Connect register in the Getting live checklist.
  2. Click Toast.
  3. Paste the Client ID, Client secret and API access URL into the fields with those names.
  4. Paste the line from Toast's email into Restaurant GUID. Pickup Signal picks out the GUID.
  5. Click Connect Toast.

Pickup Signal shows the restaurant it connected to. Orders now reach your board within 5 minutes. The webhook below makes them arrive as soon as they're rung up.

Add the Orders webhook

  1. In Pickup Signal, click Copy next to Webhook URL.
  2. In Toast Web, go to Integrations → Toast API access → Manage webhooks → + Add webhook.
  3. For credentials, choose Pickup Signal.
  4. For Event category, choose Orders.
  5. Paste the webhook URL.
  6. Enter any name and your email for alerts, then click Save.
  7. Open the new webhook and copy its secret key.
  8. Back in Pickup Signal, paste it into Webhook secret key and click Save and check.
  9. Ring up a test order on Toast. When Toast sends it, Pickup Signal checks its signature. Once you see Toast’s signature checks out, orders arrive the moment they're rung up.

If the check takes a while, orders still reach your board: Pickup Signal also checks Toast every 5 minutes.

Names or numbers

In-store Toast orders may arrive without a customer name. The board then shows the order number. While you wait for the test order, setup tells you how many of your recent Toast orders came with a name.

If you see an error

These are the messages Pickup Signal can show during setup, and what to do about each.

Toast didn’t accept this client ID and secret. Copy both again, whole. If the secret was rotated, use the new one.

Copy the client ID and secret again. If you no longer have the secret, make new credentials (steps 2 to 8) and paste those.

These credentials can’t read orders for that restaurant. Check the restaurant GUID, that this location is on the credentials, and that orders:read is ticked.

Check that the GUID line comes from the email about these credentials. If the location or orders:read is missing, make new credentials with both (steps 2 to 8).

Paste the API access URL from the same Toast page. It starts with https:// and ends in toasttab.com.

Copy the API access URL from the page that shows your client ID, not the address of Toast Web itself.

Paste the restaurant GUID from Toast’s email. It looks like 8-4-4-4-12 letters and numbers.

Paste the whole GUID line from the email Toast sent about the new credentials.

That Toast restaurant is already connected to another shop. Disconnect it there first.

One Toast restaurant feeds one Pickup Signal shop. Disconnect Toast on the other shop (see below), then try again here. If that shop isn't in your account, email hello@pickupsignal.com.

This shop is on Square. Disconnect Square from the dashboard first, then connect Toast.

On your dashboard, open the ··· menu on the shop, click Disconnect Square… and confirm. Then come back to Order sources.

Square is still linked to this shop and stopped working.

Click Disconnect Square in that message, or use the ··· menu on your dashboard. Then connect Toast.

This shop is on Clover. Disconnect Clover from the dashboard first, then connect Toast.

On your dashboard, open the ··· menu on the shop, click Disconnect Clover…, then Disconnect Clover. Then come back to Order sources.

Toast isn’t answering right now. Nothing you pasted is wrong. Try again in a minute.

Wait a minute and click Try again. The same goes for Couldn’t connect Toast just now. Try again in a minute.

Too many tries. Wait a few minutes, then try again.

Wait a few minutes before the next try.

This shop belongs to a different account. Sign in with the account that owns it.

Sign out of Pickup Signal and sign in with the account that added this shop.

No signed order from Toast yet. Orders still reach your board: we check Toast every 5 minutes.

Check that the webhook URL in Toast matches the one Pickup Signal shows exactly, and that you pasted the whole secret key. Pickup Signal keeps listening while you fix it.

If your credentials stop working

If your dashboard says Toast stopped sending orders, the credentials were deleted, or the secret was rotated, in Toast Web.

  1. Make new credentials in Toast Web (steps 2 to 8).
  2. On your dashboard, click Paste new credentials.
  3. Paste the four values, then click Connect Toast.
  4. Pickup Signal shows the webhook step again. If you made a new webhook in Toast, paste its secret key.

Orders from the last 30 minutes come back too.
